REUS

Reus is not only the birthplace of Gaudí and one of Catalonia's most culturally active towns, but
also stands at a crossroads which makes it the perfect stopping point for browsing its historic
quarter and doing a little shopping.
Visitors could start their tour in the Plaza de Prim square, the site of the lovely Fortuny theatre,
before going on down Calle de Monterols to the Plaza del Mercadal square. This is the site of the
Casa Navàs building, a Modernist jewel designed by Doménech i Montaner which still contains
period furniture, coffering and lamps. From El Mercadal you could continue on along Carrer Major
which will take you to the Centro de Lectura building, a popular athenaeum with a valuable library
and interesting works of art. Highlights in the Plaza de Sant Pere square include the 16th-
century Gothic church and the octagonal bell tower offering views over the whole of the Costa
Dorada. The museums in Reus include particularly the Salvador Vilaseca archaeological
museum and the Provincial History Museum, containing paintings and drawings by Marià
Fortuny and sculptures by Joan Rebull.
If you're interested in Gaudí, Reus has a route which takes in the house where he was born and
the church where he was baptised, and concludes at the Gaudí Centre: 1,200 square metres of
exhibition space dedicated to his work.
